Canada and US Finalize Trade Deal, But Details Are Murky

Canada and the United States claim they are in the final stages of negotiating a trade deal, yet specific details remain unclear.

Nadine Yousif, Senior Canada Reporter, shared that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer revealed the agreement addresses several trade concerns the US had with Canada.

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney both expressed optimism about the proposed deal. Trump highlighted its benefits for US farmers and manufacturers, while Carney emphasized it would secure favorable terms for Canada’s key sectors and provide future trading certainty.

Negotiators held intensive discussions over three days, leading to a pause in new tariffs Trump had threatened to impose on Canadian goods. However, the agreement’s scope, concessions, and outstanding issues remain largely undisclosed.

Greer, after a meeting with his Canadian counterpart, expressed satisfaction with the negotiations. He promised to brief Congress and stakeholders soon. "We believe this deal strengthens the North American economy," he stated, noting it addresses several US trade grievances with Canada.

Trump confirmed Canada will eliminate tariffs on US farmers but did not specify affected agricultural sectors. He also indicated a modest reduction in US tariffs on Canadian goods.

Carney, in a X post, congratulated Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s Trade Minister, on the negotiations’ progress. He added, "We are close to an agreement that secures the best terms for each of Canada’s most important strategic sectors."

LeBlanc and his team have been in Washington for over a week to prevent the Trump administration’s planned new tariffs, now paused until the weekend, from taking effect. Canada aims to reduce or eliminate US tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber. The US has requested various concessions from Canada as part of the deal.
