RAWALPINDI, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 18th Aug, 2026) — A concept-based curriculum is being developed for students from Grades 1 to 5 in Punjab to enhance their academic skills, creativity, and practical understanding, according to District Education Officer (Primary Women) Dr Hajra Shaheen.
She explained that the new curriculum aims to move away from rote learning and focuses on fostering students’ comprehension, observation, inquiry, analysis, and problem-solving abilities. Educational concepts will be taught through engaging activities, tailored to students’ age, mental capacity, and individual learning needs.
Dr Hajra emphasized that this approach encourages children to learn through observation, practical experience, and active participation instead of merely memorizing textbook information. Teachers will play a more dynamic role, encouraging student engagement in classroom activities, asking questions, incorporating their perspectives, and promoting independent observation and conclusion drawing.
Teacher training will be integral to the new system, equipping educators with modern techniques and a deeper understanding of activity- and concept-based learning. The curriculum also aims to streamline academic content, making it simpler and more age-appropriate, thereby reducing unnecessary burdens on students.
Progress has been made in simplifying the Grades 1 to 5 curriculum, aligning it with contemporary educational standards. Textbooks based on this new framework will be ready for the 2027-28 academic session.
Dr Shaheen highlighted the importance of establishing strong educational foundations during the primary years, as learning habits and understanding developed in these early grades significantly impact future academic performance. She further mentioned that Punjab is also introducing artificial intelligence (AI) education at the primary level from the 2027-28 academic session.
Dr Hajra expressed optimism that the new curriculum and modern teaching methods will provide government school students with a more high-quality, relevant, and practical educational experience.
