Dave Bautista Confirmed as New God of War Star in TV Adaptation

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has reported that actor Dave Bautista has been cast as the lead role of Kratos in the upcoming God of War TV show.

The former WWE star will step into the shoes left empty by Ryan Hurst, who had to withdraw due to an injury. Bautista’s casting comes after weeks of rumours surrounding his potential involvement. He confirmed the news by sharing an image of the character on his Instagram account.

According to Deadline, filming is set to restart from scratch later this year.

God of War has become one of Sony’s most successful franchises since the release of the original PlayStation 2 game in 2005. Its rich setting, inspired by ancient Greek mythology, along with its intense combat, captivated fans worldwide. The series follows Kratos, a demi-god on a quest for revenge and redemption.

The TV adaptation will follow the storyline of the games, focusing on Kratos’ journey with his son Atreus as they travel to spread Kratos’ wife’s ashes. As described by Prime Video, "Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."

Bautista, 57, has established a successful acting career since retiring from professional wrestling in 2019. Notable roles include Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as appearances in Dune, Knives Out: Glass Onion, and Army of the Dead.

His extensive wrestling background stretches over two decades, making him a recognisable figure in the WWE.
