Employees union urges HW&SC’s CEO to seek bailout package

Employees Union Urges HW&SC’s CEO To Seek Bailout Package

The Mehran Workers Union of Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation (HW&SC) has written a letter to the corporation’s Chief Executive Officer Tufail Abro, urging him to approach the Sindh Government for a bailout package.

Financial Distress at HW&SC

According to Muhammad Aslam Abbassi, the union’s General Secretary, the corporation has defaulted on payment of 20 months’ salaries and pensions to its workforce. He also highlighted the non-release of retirement funds for former employees who retired between 2022 and 2026.

Abbassi reminded that, as per the HW&SC Act, 2023, the corporation can request and obtain funds from the provincial government. He further stated that salary and pensions are essential expenditures that cannot be stopped.

Concerns Over Management Performance

The union leader raised questions about the performance of the top four officers ranking after the CEO. He urged Abro to direct the corporation’s secretary to call a meeting of the HW&SC board of directors to resolve issues related to unpaid salaries, pensions, and retirement funds.

Abbassi noted that the Sindh Government’s annual grant of Rs350 million is insufficient to meet these financial requirements, advocating for an increase.
