Geospatial AI Training and Climate Policy Webinar Mark Week 5 of Future Leadership Internship

ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – August 20, 2026) The fifth week of the Future Leadership Internship Programme 2026, organized by AI Geo Navigators, featured two significant events: a technical training session on artificial intelligence and machine learning for geospatial applications, and an expert webinar on climate science, policy, and implementation of the Paris Agreement.

This nationwide, fully virtual program brings together students, graduates, and early-career professionals from Pakistan, offering them opportunities to:

  • Strengthen their technical knowledge in AI and geospatial technologies.
  • Engage with industry professionals.
  • Connect geospatial technologies with real-world climate and environmental challenges.

Technical Training Session: AI/ML for Geospatial Applications

During Week 05, interns participated in a technical session titled "Introduction to AI/ML for Geospatial Applications." The session covered:

  • Key concepts including features and labels, training and testing datasets, classification and regression, land-cover classification, model prediction, validation, and accuracy assessment.
  • How machine learning techniques can be applied to satellite and geospatial data to identify and classify different types of land cover.
  • Importance of model validation and accuracy assessment in developing reliable geospatial solutions.

Webinar: Climate Science, Policy, and the Paris Agreement

The second major event was a live webinar titled "Climate Science, Policy, and the Paris Agreement", held on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The session featured Arif Goheer, Executive Director of the Global Change Impact Studies Centre (GCISC).

The webinar explored:

  • How scientific evidence and international climate commitments translate into measurable national action.
  • Global climate governance, including the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body, Technology Executive Committee, IPCC processes, UNFCCC, and climate policy implementation in Pakistan.
  • The role of GCISC as a scientific research institution under the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination.
  • Importance of scientific research in informing climate-related policies and planning in Pakistan.

By combining technical learning with climate policy discussions, Week 05 allowed interns to:

  • Explore how machine learning models can support satellite-based land-cover classification.
  • Understand the connection between scientific and geospatial information and climate reporting, adaptation planning, and evidence-based decision-making.
