Govt Bound to Facilitate PTI Founder’s Private Treatment If Needed: Tariq Fazal

ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 20th Aug, 2026) Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry on Thursday apprised the Senate that the government would be obligated to provide PTI founder treatment at Shifa International Hospital or another better-equipped medical facility if suitable healthcare was unavailable at government hospitals.

Responding to a point of order from the Leader of the Opposition in Senate, the minister clarified that the government aimed to provide necessary medical treatment without opposition or creating hurdles. He emphasized that the government would adhere to the Supreme Court’s decision regarding this matter.

Dr Tariq Fazal explained that, according to existing rules, convicted prisoners receive medical treatment at government hospitals. A legal clarification regarding this arrangement is pending before the Supreme Court. If the Court determines that alternative arrangements are necessary, the government will comply.

The minister reiterated his commitment to ensuring the PTI founder receives the required treatment, stating that the government would facilitate it at Shifa International Hospital or a similarly advanced facility if government hospitals cannot accommodate his needs.

Addressing concerns about Dr Yasmin Rashid’s health, Dr Tariq Fazal expressed the government’s concern and promised to follow up with the Punjab government and jail administration. He assured the House that all permissible medical facilities under jail rules would be provided to her.

Regarding the May 9 incidents, the minister described them as dark moments in Pakistan’s history, involving attacks on sensitive installations, police, and national assets, including the attack on the Corps Commander’s House in Lahore. He mentioned that evidence, including footage, is available, and those involved have faced legal consequences. He emphasized that individuals unrelated to the incidents should not be punished, while those found guilty have been convicted by courts.
