LB Elections in Punjab to be held between Dec 15 to Jan 15
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Punjab government have agreed to conduct local body (LB) elections in the province between December 15, 2026, to January 15, 2027.
A meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, discussed the date for setting election schedules for local governments in Punjab. The ECP was informed about the completion of the delimitation process in the province.
Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja stated:
Holding local body elections is a constitutional requirement under Article 140A of the Constitution. Under the Elections Act, it is the duty of the Election Commission to organize elections within 120 days of the term expiration of local governments.
Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique expressed that the Punjab Chief Minister is committed to holding LB elections in the province and that a proposed timeline of December 15 to January 15 considers exam schedules and foggy conditions.
The Chief Secretary of Punjab mentioned the provincial government’s desire to conduct elections in phases, requesting a plan from the Punjab government regarding these phased elections soon.
