KARACHI, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 18th Aug, 2026) Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday presided over a meeting of the provincial cabinet at CM House, which approved a wide range of measures to support farmers, strengthen food security, improve public service delivery, enhance energy regulation, reinforce security infrastructure, revive industrial investment and streamline institutional governance.
Attended by provincial ministers, advisers, special assistants, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah and relevant secretaries, the meeting focused on:
- Implementing cabinet decisions without delay, particularly those related to wheat availability, support for growers, potable water supply, security coordination, and investment promotion.
- Ensuring protection of farmers, affordability of essential commodities, strengthening public institutions, and fostering an environment conducive to economic growth.
Wheat Stock Situation:
The Cabinet thoroughly reviewed the current wheat stock situation in Sindh, which boasts a total available wheat of 4.84 million metric tonnes (MMT). This includes 4.70 MMT from 2026 production and 0.14 MMT of carry-forward stock.
Improved administrative measures have increased wheat visibility, with hidden or unaccounted stocks dropping significantly. In July, estimated at 1.18 MMT, these reserves had decreased to approximately 0.70 MMT by mid-August, with around 0.19 MMT confiscated during enforcement operations. Over 800 locations were visited by inspection teams, resulting in the seizure of 257,738 tonnes of undeclared or hoarded wheat.
The cabinet approved the procurement of 223,455 tonnes of PASSCO wheat available throughout Sindh at Rs 4,150 per 40 kilograms.
Improving Flour Availability:
Measures to enhance flour availability were also considered. The cabinet approved increasing the stock retention limit for functional flour mills from one month to three months of grinding capacity.
Additionally, subject to finance department approval and a strict monitoring mechanism, 56,729 tonnes of seized wheat from flour mills in Sukkur and Larkana divisions will be utilized for local atta (flour) production. Mills must maintain an ex-mill price of Rs112 per kilogram and adhere to the prescribed grinding and supply mechanism.
Enforcement and Vigilance:
The Chief Minister directed the Food Department and district administrations to:
- Maintain strict vigilance against hoarding.
- Ensure transparent monitoring of wheat stocks.
- Take action against illegal movement and concealment of wheat.
