Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell Steps Down Following Security Concerns

The boss of hotel chain Travelodge, Jo Boydell, is stepping down as the company addresses serious security issues after a sexual assault at one of its hotels. A woman staying in Maidenhead, Berkshire, was sexually assaulted in December 2022 after a man lied to gain access to her room, leading to an independent review of Travelodge’s security measures.

Kyran Smith was jailed for seven years and six months for the attack. Boydell will be replaced temporarily by Ray Reidy, who assured that "we remain focused on the safety and well-being of our guests… [and] will continue taking the actions necessary to strengthen the business."

This comes after another incident where a domestic violence survivor shared her traumatic experience with Travelodge. She told the BBC how reception staff gave a key card to her abuser, allowing him to attack her in her hotel room. She described the chain as having "failed" her.

In summary:

  • Security Concerns: Travelodge CEO Jo Boydell steps down after incidents of assault and safety failures.
  • Assault in Maidenhead: A man gained access to a woman’s room through deception, assaulting her.
  • Review and Replacement: An independent review is underway, with Ray Reidy taking over temporarily.
