UN Delegation Visits Historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi

KARACHI, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 21st Aug, 2026) A United Nations delegation, led by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya, visited the historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi on Friday.

The delegation included Ms. Afke Bootsman, Head of the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office, Pakistan, and Imran Khan Laghari, Provincial Coordinator, United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office, Sindh.

At the invitation of the church administration, Roma Mushtaq Matto, Member of the Sindh Provincial Assembly and Parliamentary Secretary for Minorities Affairs, also attended and welcomed the delegation alongside church leaders.

During the visit, the church Fathers briefed the guests on the historical and religious significance of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, its services to the Christian community, and its various welfare and social initiatives.

Roma Matto appreciated the United Nations for its services in humanitarian welfare, sustainable development, climate action, disaster response, and support for vulnerable communities.

She stated that effective cooperation between the Sindh government, the UN, and religious and social institutions could mark an important milestone for public welfare, social inclusion, and sustainable development.
She added that the PPP leadership firmly believes all religious communities in Pakistan are equal partners in the country’s progress.

Mohamed Yahya thanked the hosts for their warm hospitality and emphasized the importance of joint efforts to promote religious harmony, tolerance, social inclusion, and human development across Pakistan.

The meeting concluded with the delegation, Matto, and the church Fathers exchanging views on minority welfare and community-level cooperation, reaffirming a shared commitment to promoting peace, mutual respect, and tolerance among Pakistan’s diverse religious communities.
