NEW YORK (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM – 20th Aug, 2026) : UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed his intention to host a new "5+1" meeting aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue. This follows agreements reached between both sides and guarantor powers—Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Guterres emphasized the importance of completing confidence-building measures to ensure the process’ success. During his visit to Cyprus, he urged Cypriot leaders Ersin Tatar and Nikos Christodoulides to make concessions and intensify these efforts.

He further confirmed that his Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, continues her endeavors to achieve a settlement that aligns with the aspirations of Cypriots for peace and cooperation. The Secretary-General highlighted the respect due to the authority of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and praised the Committee on Missing Persons and technical committees for narrowing gaps and improving citizens’ daily lives.

Concluding, Guterres noted that a resolution to the crisis is crucial for broader regional stability amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics. He reaffirmed the UN’s full commitment to supporting the Cypriot people during this critical phase, despite lacking formal authority to enforce peace.
