Why is Ukraine’s ex-defence minister calling for elections?
The BBC reports that Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s popular former defence minister, has called for wartime elections—a move seen as a challenge to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, which has led to the suspension of elections.
Fedorov stated in a video, "Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia." However, practical concerns remain about conducting free and fair elections in a war-torn nation, concerns that Fedorov has not addressed. He has also not confirmed if he would run against Zelensky.
Dan Johnson from the BBC reports from Kyiv on this developing story.
