Nation Remembers Rashid Minhas for His Heroic Legacy and Undying Courage

The 55th martyrdom anniversary of Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed, one of the youngest recipients of the Nishan-e-Haider, was observed across Pakistan on Sunday. He embraced martyrdom at Goth Ahmed Shah in Sujawal district on this day in 1971.

Defence analysts note that Rashid Minhas Shaheed’s selfless act stands as a powerful example of courage, loyalty, and defense of the homeland. The nation and the Pakistani forces cherish his incomparable sacrifice, forever etched in their memories.

On this solemn occasion, Lt. Gen. Naeem Khalid Lodhi emphasized the unwavering commitment of Pakistan’s armed forces to safeguard the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests. He highlighted the vigilant watch kept by these forces on the nation’s ideological frontiers.

"At critical moments, the valiant sons of our armed forces have bravely confronted and defeated enemies, including the scourge of terrorism," Lodhi stated. The nation and its heroes have displayed remarkable unity in facing challenges, defeating them on all fronts, he added.

A poignant tale of bravery is that of Rashid Minhas Shaheed, who joined the air force and was commissioned on March 13, 1971, in the 51st GD(P) Course. On August 20, during his second solo flight in a T-33 jet trainer in Karachi, he encountered a dramatic turn of events. A Bengali instructor pilot, Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman, signaled him to stop and then took over the seat. The jet took off, heading towards India.

Minhas radioed PAF Base Masroor, revealing the hijacking. Despite attempts to regain control, the plane crashed 51 kilometers from the Indian border near Thatta, claiming both men’s lives. Rashid Minhas Shaheed was posthumously awarded Pakistan’s highest military honor, the Nishan-e-Haider.
