Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rainwater Projects Benefit Tens of Thousands
ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – August 19, 2026) The government has initiated rainwater harvesting projects in water-stressed regions of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, providing vital water access to around 67,000 people and 98,000 livestock.
Thar Desert Initiative
In the Thar Desert, a network of ten rainwater harvesting ponds has been constructed with a combined storage capacity of 35.21 million gallons. This project serves approximately 46,000 individuals and 70,000 animals, offering an alternative water source in this arid area. The initiative also includes a solar-powered tube well system, supplying water to roughly 3,000 livestock daily.
Kohat and Hangu Projects
Seven rainwater harvesting ponds have been developed in Kohat and Hangu with support from UNICEF. These projects collectively hold 16 million gallons of water and benefit 21,000 people and 28,000 animals. Beyond rainwater collection, these efforts enhance groundwater recharge through gabion structures.
The interventions highlight a growing emphasis on decentralized, community-driven water management, especially in regions where traditional water infrastructure is challenging to implement. The implementation of rainwater harvesting ponds, groundwater recharge structures, and solar-powered pumping systems could offer a cost-effective solution for improving water security across Pakistan.
